Salsa Powderkeg Tandem arrives!

Salsa PowderkegIt took over twelve months of discussion, then three months of nervous anticipation once we ordered, but our new Salsa Powderkeg tandem bike has finally arrived!

We first bought ourselves a tandem bike about six years ago. After searching high and low we settled on a Pegasus Duet II, and travelled to Melbourne to pick it up. We love that tandem and generally ride it whenever we go anywhere together, but it had a problem. The more rough and bumpy dirt roads we did, the more we wished we could fit fatter tyres on the tandem, and that just wasn’t going to happen. The Pegasus was designed as a road tandem, not designed to take anything fatter than a 700x35mm tyre.

Bring on the Salsa Powderkeg! Salsa Powderkeg

Salsa’s Powderkeg tandem has been around for a couple of years, but getting one in Australia was not that easy. As it was, once we ordered it (through the distributor) from the U.S., we had to wait for four whole months before it arrived…the first Salsa Powderkeg sold in Australia! To us!

Designed as a mountain bike tandem, it’s still debatable whether the Powderkeg will get much of a go actually mountain biking. I’m a very timid mountain biker and generally avoid it if possible. Neither of us are sure how we will cope when it comes to testing the tandem out together on MTB trails. Rail trails, dirt roads, gravel, those are the sorts of terrains we can imagine riding without too much trouble…

Currently sitting on the shop floor waiting to be built, one thing is for sure, the Salsa Powderkeg is going to open up a whole new world of adventure! We’ll let you know how it goes!Salsa Powderkeg

  1. It looks beautiful. I can’t wait to see it all built up. The frame colour will also match your panniers. Good on you. 🙂
