Day 8 – St Helen’s to Weldborough

Today was the day our legs started to feel happier and we rode west onto lovely, quiet country roads. It was going to be a great day! Google maps told us we would ride the first 27kms to Pyengana in about 2 hours and we were tentatively hopeful.

Roughly two hours of undulating riding later, we reached Pyengana Cheese Factory as Google maps predicted! When Google predicts two hours for 27 kilometres of riding, you know there are going to be hills…there were…

Pyengana Cheese Factory - we did the cheese tasting and can vouch for the deliciousness of the cheeses!

Pyengana to Weldborough was the hilly section according to everyone we had spoken to. They were right! After having a coffee and cheese tasting at Pyemgana we set off to Weldborough with the thought of beer at the Weldborough Pub leading us on.

I was trying to capture the height of our climb with this photo. There is something quite torturous about riding for an hour and knowing you have only ridden ten kilometres!

It took an hour to ride 10kms. Some of that was at about 6 or 7 kms an hour, and the rest was no quicker than about 10kms/hr!

Weldborough Pub! We made it! All gruelling 44kms (approximately).

Weldborough Pub was well worth the ride! We bought a beer the minute we arrived (well, we chatted with Adrian who had cycled up the mountain from the opposite direction first. He had already started on the beer and was waxing lyrical about his tortorous climb up from Scottsdale), set up our tent in the backyard of the pub, which cost ten dollars a person, and then ate a meal in the pub before crashing into bed looking forward to a downhill ride into Scottsdale the next day.
