Day 12/13 – Kerang to Lake Charm to Swan Hill

When we arrived in Kerang yesterday, it was 9.30ish and already so hot we sought the shade outside the bakery we went to and fed our faces at.

After spending some cool, peaceful time in the library, we went to the supermarket to stock up. An old guy we met at Boort had told us the Apex Park, 8kms past Kerang at Reedy Lake, was beautiful, had toilets, and, even though the rules didn’t allow camping, if we didn’t cause trouble we’d be fine.

Loaded up and ready to bush camp if necessary. We bought 5 litres of extra wAter, newspaper, food and wine; all up about 10 extra kilos of gear!

Reedy Lake, encouraging place for cycling campers as these photos show.

Reedy Lake was nice in its own way, but we were starting to feel the effects of the 40 degree day and were longing for lots of shade and swimming. Lake Charm was the next point, only ten more kilometres, so we decided to push on.

It was stinking hot on that 20 minute trip, so hot we drank a whole 750ml bottle of water each by the time we got there. There was no shoulder and we had to cope with some big trucks, which was not very comfortable.

The ride was worth it though, and despite being a motorboat/skiing/jet ski paradise, it was cool, shady and grassy and just what we needed.

Going to bed at 8pm was not such a good idea because it was very hot in the tent, and combined with the noise of partying it took a while to get to sleep.

Riding to Swan Hill, even leaving at 6.30am, was hot, hard work after yesterday’s 73km in the heat. Upon arrival in Swan Hill at 8.30am, we were desperate for a good feed. A local guy rode up beside us for a chat as we entered town and advised us of a good cafe. Was it ever!

The guys on the left spoke to us after breakfast. They couldn't believe we managed to finish the whole plate! Little did they know we polished off 2 litres of orange juice when we left there and went to the supermarket!

The pool right near out tent site was delightfully refreshing.

After a day resting and swimming in the pool we went for a walk around town. It was 41 degrees according to the temperature gauge at the car dealership. When we walked past there on the way to dinner at 7pm, it was 42 degrees!

We rocked up to the Swan Hill club for a cold beer before dinner. It was happy hour! The beers were three dollars for another 20 minutes and then they bought each table a plate of crumbed seafood! We couldn’t believe it! If we hadn’t been meeting someone for dinner we would have eaten the whole lot. That’s right! We did!

Someone we knew from Townsville moved to Swan Hill a week ago, so we caught up with him for dinner, then went to bed at the late hour of 9.30pm. We will hang out in Swan Hill for a couple of days while the heat wave does its thing, then move on towards Mildura.
